In celebration of the exhibition Encoded Holidays: Gary Hutton x Tom Bonauro, join the Museum of Craft and Design on Zoom for a virtual discussion with celebrated San Francisco designer Gary Hutton and MCD Curator Ariel Zaccheo.
In this virtual event, Gary Hutton will discuss his 40 years designing, including three decades collaborating with artist Tom Bonauro on their annual holiday card project. These miniature, mailable sculptures, or “sculptures-in-a-box”, combine holiday tradition with craftsmanship and design, embodying the aesthetic and material sensibilities of both artist and designer. In Hutton’s words, “Sometimes confounding, sometimes perplexing and sometimes bewildering, the work we produced together reflects a pursuit of visual delight and a comment on the social zeitgeist of that moment. Always in search of a new material with which to convey a message, we ran the gamut from the artistic to the industrial to the mundane, but always with the intent of social comment through introspection.” In this hour-long discussion, attendees will enjoy a closer look at the works on view at MCD and learn about the inspiration and processes behind their making.
