holiday cards by year

sculptures in a box

graphic artist tom bonauro created the original gary hutton design logo and graphic identity in 1986. he and gary immediately struck a close friendship. around this time, gary brought the idea of designing a concept for a holiday card to tom, and thus began the first of 30 editions of sculptures in a box. each year, the concept grew in scope, and each year a layer of depth was added. first a card, then an object, then a box, then the stuffing, then the wrapping, then the card, then the stack of 800 boxes to address and mail etc...

2016 was the 30th anniversary of the collaboration. fans and recipients of the project include amy sedaris, gus van sant, michael stipe and hundreds more.
