at the private first congregational pilgrim school in los angeles, gary's college roommate took a post as librarian, and immediately felt the need to improve the atmosphere in the small, outdated room. kids these days are less interested in libraries than ever so she knew a change was needed and that gary was the designer to do it.
20th century modernism is still strong in los angeles and gary called on that for compact vibrancy and style. after the decorating was done, the librarian reported back that the library was the new place for students to hang out. as gary reflects on the experience, it's pretty cool that an old guy can still do something that kids enjoy.
